Exercise as Medicine for Cancer: Every Dose Matters, Even Late Stage

A new study from Edith Cowan University has shown that exercise can be really important for people with advanced cancer.

A new study from Edith Cowan University has shown that exercise can be really important for people with advanced cancer.

Key Findings

  • Exercise can help fight against cancer.
  • Exercise increases myokine levels, which can help stop cancer from growing and can even help fight against cancer cells.
  • People with advanced cancer need to exercise for more than 20 minutes a day and should include resistance training to help grow their muscles and produce more myokines.

The study found that when people with advanced cancer did a short workout, it helped to fight against the cancer. This happens because exercise makes our muscles produce special proteins called “myokines.” These proteins can help stop cancer from growing and can even help fight against cancer cells. This is really important because it can help people with advanced cancer live longer.

The study found that after just 34 minutes of exercise on a stationary bike, the patients’ myokine levels increased which suppressed the growth of cancer cells by 17%.

The researchers said that the patients need to exercise for more than 20 minutes a day and should include resistance training to help grow their muscles and produce more myokines.

This study is a big breakthrough in understanding how exercise can help people with cancer.
