During a conversation with a new client, who had spent many years grinding in her career to get to where she is today, the topic of delayed gratification came up.
The dictionary describes delayed gratification as the process in which an individual resists the temptation of an immediate reward in preference for a later reward.
Work hard now to be rewarded later.
Make these difficult decisions now so it’s easy to deal with later.
Save your money now so that you can spend it later.
But we never really link this thought process to our health and wellness, even though (in my opinion) it’s more important than money, your career or material possessions!
What if you started practicing delayed gratification in your day to day life with your food choices and good habits?
Resist the temptation (not at all the time, but most) for the immediate reward, in this case, let’s call it ‘mouth pleasure’ of that burger or that doughnut you really really want, so that at a later date you are rewarded with better health, less chronic illnesses and a longer life.
How does that sound?
